Schedule

  • A minimum of 30 hours is required for full time positions
  • No on call or after hours emergency calls

Position Summary

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing quality patient care while maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient hospital environment. This position involves animal handling, client service, patient care assistance, cleaning, and general hospital support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Safely restrain and handle dogs, cats, and other companion animals
  • Assist veterinarians and technicians during examinations and treatments
  • Monitor hospitalized patients and report concerns to medical staff
  • Provide basic care for hospitalized patients
  • Clean and prepare kennels, cages, and treatment areas

Hospital Operations

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation throughout the hospital
  • Clean, disinfect, and restock examination rooms and treatment areas
  • Prepare surgical and treatment areas as directed
  • Launder hospital linens and maintain supplies
  • Properly dispose of medical waste according to hospital protocols
  • Ability to learn to safely handle patients, give injections, draw blood, take rectal temperatures, monitor anesthesia, clean and wrap instrument packs, fill prescriptions, and enter charges and charge out clients
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with clients and coworkers
  • Arrive and be ready to work on time, or inform your supervisor in a timely fashion if you will not be there and ready to work by your scheduled time

Client Service

  • Greet clients in a professional and friendly manner
  • Assist with patient check in and check out as needed
  • Communicate effectively with clients and hospital staff
  • Provide basic patient care instructions as directed by medical staff

Administrative Support

  • Restock inventory and supplies
  • Assist with maintaining accurate patient records
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support hospital operations
  • Filling medications and discussing them with clients
  • Cash handling and charging out clients
  • Computer proficiency for chart taking and online communication with clients
  • Basic phone etiquette

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous experience working with animals is preferred but not required
  • Ability to safely handle and restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Basic computer skills
  • Willingness to learn veterinary medical procedures and terminology

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently, and heavier weights with assistance
  • Ability to safely restrain animals of various sizes
  • Ability to work around animal dander, hair, odors, and cleaning chemicals
